CAGE Code

Five-character identifier assigned to entities that do business with the federal government.

Full Definition

A Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code is a five-character alphanumeric identifier assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to entities doing business with the federal government. Originally developed by NATO to standardize contractor identification across allied nations, CAGE codes are used on contracts, solicitations, invoices, and in government procurement databases worldwide. U.S. entities receive a CAGE code automatically when they register in SAM.gov — no separate application is required. Foreign entities use the NATO CAGE (NCAGE) system. CAGE codes are linked to a specific physical address, so companies with multiple locations may have multiple codes. The DLA maintains the master CAGE database, and codes remain active as long as the entity maintains an active SAM.gov registration. CAGE codes are essential for the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS), the Electronic Document Access (EDA) system, and Wide Area Workflow (WACS) for invoicing.

Why It Matters

Your CAGE code is one of three essential identifiers for government contracting alongside your UEI number and NAICS codes. It appears on every contract, modification, invoice, and receiving report throughout the procurement lifecycle. Keep your CAGE code information current in SAM.gov — mismatches between your CAGE address and company address can cause payment delays and compliance issues. When forming joint ventures or teaming arrangements, each entity needs its own CAGE code. Include your CAGE code prominently on your capability statement, proposals, and correspondence with contracting officers. If you acquire another company, you may need to update or obtain a new CAGE code. For subcontractors, prime contractors will request your CAGE code during teaming negotiations to verify your registration status and eligibility.

Example

A small cybersecurity firm registers in SAM.gov and automatically receives CAGE code 7K3M9. When responding to an Air Force RFP for penetration testing services, they include this CAGE code in Section K of their proposal as required by the solicitation instructions. Later, when submitting invoices through Wide Area Workflow (WACS), the CAGE code links their payment request to the correct contract record, ensuring timely processing by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS).
