Cooperative agreement on global occupational health with the World Health Organization

In 2007, the United States endorsed World Health Assembly Resolution 60.26, “Workers’ Health: Global Plan of Action”. This plan provides a broad public health framework for action by the 194 Member States of WHO to protect and promote the health of workers in the period 2008-2017. Furthermore, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030) set specific targets for social protection, disease prevention, health coverage and decent work for all. WHO is currently developing a road map for action by health systems to achieve these objectives. The WHO has a unique relationship with national Governments, which allows them to join regional and country efforts together with ILO and to strengthen the network of WHO Collaborating Centers for occupational health (CCs). NIOSH/CDC has been a CC since 1976. The WHO Occupational Health Program has received funding from NIOSH since 1992. This project assists WHO to develop practical guidance and tools and to provide technical assistance to developing countries to upgrade their capacities to prevent work-related diseases, injuries, and fatalities and to achieve the targets set by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the area of workers’ health and preventing occupational diseases and injuries. This award will strengthen the performance of health systems in occupational health, develop and implement programs for the informal workforce, and assess the effectiveness of a global database platform for monitoring worker health globally.
