NASA’s Technology Transfer Program solicits inquiries from companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture and market the following technology. License rights may be issued on an exclusive or nonexclusive basis and may include specific fields of use. NASA provides no funding in conjunction with these potential licenses. THE TECHNOLOGY: NASA has developed an electrode composite material capable of both high energy density and high power density relative to conventional batteries. Electrochemical capacitors, or supercapacitors, have gained intense interest as an alternative to traditional energy storage devices in recent years. The applications for the supercapcitors range from plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to backup power sources. While the power density of supercapacitors surpasses that of batteries, commercially available batteries have a significantly higher specific energy density. This innovation develops electrode composite materials that combine graphene with a metal oxide nanocomposite of manganese oxide and cobalt oxide. It comprises a scalable, integrated materials synthesis and device fabrication process to optimize specific capacitance as well as cycling life time and device reliability. Both energy density and power density are exceptionally high.
