TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY: Modular Battery Charge Controller (LEW-TOPS-44)

NASA's Technology Transfer Program solicits inquiries from companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture and market the following technology. THE TECHNOLOGY: Innovators at NASA's Glenn Research Center have developed the Modular Battery Charge Controller, a digital-charge control battery management system (BMS) that controls and monitors individual cells in a battery string. Each individual cell's charge controller monitors the voltage, temperature, and current of that cell in a battery string, protecting the cell from damage while prolonging the battery's life. NASA Glenn's BMS uses a distributed architecture for charge control and a masterless control area network (CAN) bus to link the charge controllers. This modular architecture improves BMS safety and reliability, because the failure of one or more controllers does not impact the remaining controllers. In contrast, traditional single controllers are susceptible to single-fault failures and therefore less reliable. This innovation is ideally suited for battery energy storage systems that need cell-level charge control for safety, such as electric/hybrid vehicles, uninterrupted power systems (UPS) for critical systems, utilities, and hospitals.
