The objective of the work is to measure the loads induced in the lifting mechanism for the upper service gate at Lockport Lock, Joliet Illinois. All testing will be performed in the controlled environment of the building, which houses the machinery to minimize temperature effects in the strain gage responses. Compensation for bending effects will be achieved electronically through a Wheatstone bridge by appropriately mounting the two strain gages on each of the members tested. The two strain gages are necessary to monitor axial strain and compensate for bending effects. The gage configuration will allow all fourteen (14) anchor end rods of the lift cables to function as load cells in the case that any load distribution adjustments on the cables are necessary.
