Funding is provided by USFWS Office of Subsistence Management (OSM) through project 10-406. USFWS AFWFO will install and operate a weir at the outlet of McLees Lake, count the sockeye escapement into the lake, and sample a portion of the escapement for age, sex, and length (ASL). A scale will be collected from these fish from which age is determined. ASL data will be sent to Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG, contractor). This contract provides funding for ADFG to age the scales and provide a data file and summary to USFWS AFWFO of the age, sex, and length for each sampled fish. ADFG is a co-investigator in this project. ADFG serves in several roles including management agency for the subsistence fishery in question, as well as the only agency that historically assessed this sockeye return. ADFG has a long history of expertise in aging salmon scales from a myriad of fisheries and escapements; including these very sockeye. ADFG, Kodiak has an aging lab and can incorporate assessment of these samples in a timely manner.
