66 -- Research Grade Mobile Two Wavelength Lidar (Light detection/ranging) instrument

See Notes 22 & 26. The Lidar will be used to measure optical properties of smoke from wildland fires. Measurements are required in remote mountainous areas to study high concentrations of smoke in plumes close to fires, as well as air quality at distances up to a few hundred miles from fires. Minimum Requirements: A durable, portable instrument of a size and weight that can easily be move to mountainous areas over fairly rough roads; A rapid, full hemispherical scanning capability to direct and track a fire plume in a location of interest, while avoiding ground surfaces; Two-wavelength system to allow new calculation methods for data interpretation; Maximum eye-safety to protect people that may also be working in the area; Both dense plumes and cleaner adjacent atmospheres need to be measured in the same experiments; A complete and tested instrument, with operating and maintenance manuals, computer control and software for data collection and visualization, and training for our technical staff.
