NIIN (National Item Identification Number)
A nine-digit code that uniquely identifies each item of supply in the federal catalog system.
Full Definition
The National Item Identification Number (NIIN) is a nine-digit numeric code that uniquely identifies an item of supply within the Federal Catalog System managed by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The NIIN is the core component of the 13-digit National Stock Number (NSN), which prepends a four-digit Federal Supply Classification (FSC) code. NIINs are assigned through the Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS) and are used by all NATO countries and over 60 additional nations under the NATO Codification System (NCS). Each NIIN maps to a detailed item description including physical characteristics, performance data, and reference numbers from manufacturers. The NIIN format is NN-NNN-NNNN, where the first two digits represent the NATO country code (00 and 01 designate the United States). Once assigned, a NIIN remains permanently associated with that item and is never reused.
Why It Matters
NIINs are essential for companies selling parts, components, and supplies through DIBBS (Defense Logistics Agency Internet Bid Board System) and other DLA procurement channels. Knowing the NIINs for your products enables you to search for active solicitations, review procurement history, analyze pricing trends, and identify repeat-buy opportunities. If your product does not yet have a NIIN, you can request one through the DLA Cataloging process, which typically requires detailed technical data and manufacturer part numbers. Small businesses supplying manufactured parts should proactively catalog their items in the federal system to become visible to government buyers. The WebFLIS (Federal Logistics Information System) database is publicly searchable and lets vendors look up NIINs, NSNs, and associated procurement data.
Example
An electronics manufacturer searches DIBBS using NIIN 01-234-5678 for their military-specification circular connector and finds four active solicitations requesting quantities ranging from 200 to 5,000 units. They review the procurement history for this NIIN and discover the DLA purchases this item approximately every 90 days at an average unit price of $42.50. Using this data, they submit a competitive bid at $39.75 per unit with delivery within 45 days, undercutting the incumbent supplier while maintaining healthy margins.
